Some random musings

So, here I sit on a rainy, Sunday evening. I'm tired. I should go to bed. Colin is dozing on the couch, with an extremely sore back. Last week, he and another guy from our church went to someone else's property, who has many fallen trees that he said we could help ourselves to, as long as we cut it and took it away. Well, seeing as our only form of heating our home is with a wood stove, we need all the wood we can get. And it's free!

Yesterday, another fellow from church brought by his wood splitter. If you don't know what this is (I didn't!), it's a machine that uses hydraulics to split wood that is too tough for an ax. It's really quite nifty. You can google wood splitters if you want to know more. I'm too lazy to provide you with a link tonight. Anyway, Colin split all this wood today, and while it's not hard labour, there is a lot of bending and maneuvering the wood around and his lower back has seized up. It's a problem for him every so often. And our lovely chiropractor is 16,000 kms away. So sad. :( We really should find one here. Colin may be doing that this week if it stays bad.

The good news is that we now have a LOT of wood. We have no inkling of how much we will actually need. I'd like another truckload, just to be safe, but it's nice to know we have so much. And it's cost us next to nothing. Nice.

For those of you who are interested in Ethan's eating (or not eating) saga, you may be interested to know he tried a muesli bar tonight, which is almost unheard of. A combination of oats, honey, yogurt on a bar? Far too suspicious for our "selective" 5 year old. But he suggested trying it, and he ate the whole thing. Now, whether he ever eats one again, no one knows, but it's a huge step for our boy, who only has about 6 foods in total in his "acceptable food" repertoire. Maybe not all hope is lost. Maybe someday, he'll even venture to put meat that isn't a chicken nugget, or a vegetable in his mouth. Which, by the way, we DID get into him this week, but it was sneaky. And he doesn't know he ate it. Colin smeared avocado on the crust of Ethan's cheese pizza this week. He didn't even notice and cleaned up 3 large slices. Even I didn't notice. So sneaky, and so clever of my husband. We're thinking of buying a food processor and we can start sneaking all sorts of things into that boy. Hahaha!!

Silas, well, he's our going concern. He climbs now. It's scary. I find him on top of the kitchen table several times a day. Nothing can be up there anymore, or he goes for it, and even goes up there when it's empty. I tried putting all the chairs up ON the table, but he pulled one down the other day. And they're heavy. Luckily, it didn't fall on him, as he actually was in his high chair NEAR the table and reached for it. I tell ya, I think this kid has elastic arms, the way he can reach things. He's so proud of himself. He climbed one of our deck chairs, too, and I was in the kitchen, where he couldn't see me, but I could see him. He kept standing up and I'd say in a firm voice, "Silas, sit down!" and he'd look confused, but sit down. He had no clue where my voice was coming from, but he listened. And then he just sat there, not knowing anyone was watching him, and he babbled and talked and patted his head and laughed and clapped to his wee heart's delight. He's such a funny little character. It makes up for the hair-raising stunts he performs daily. It's a bit of a learning curve for us, having the very cautious, sensible son first, and then the mischievous dare-devil the second time. My new mantra is, "Other mothers have done this, other mothers have done this..." I repeat it to myself multiple times a day. Phew!

So, there you go. My Sunday night ramblings. I think I may head to bed. Before my little night owl awakes (that would be Silas, too). Good night! Happy weekend to you all.
