My sweet baby turns 1!

So, this won't just be about his birthday, but also my sappy mama thoughts about my wee boy being one year old. It is hard to believe my baby was just born a year ago. For all the hell we endured in the last half of 2007, the first half was pretty darn fantastic with this little boy joining our family. I could never have imagined how much MORE perfect my family could be with him in it. He's such a joyful guy. He thinks his brother hung the moon. No one can snap Silas out of an angry/upset fit faster than Ethan. He has a fiery little temper and has already perfected the arched-back-throw-down-on-the-floor tantrum. But I wouldn't know what to do with a less spirited child. I've got two of them, and their personalities make them who they are. As much as I want to pull my hair out some days, I wouldn't trade them for more compliant children. I think we'd all be too bored. ;)

Silas had his first birthday on Jan. 10. My winter baby celebrated on a beautiful, sunny, warm summer day, albeit a bit windy. We invited our friends from Levin (same ones who picked us up two weeks ago) to celebrate. Of course, at this point, we were still living in the motel, so there was certainly no cake. I had cupcakes in mind, but no bakery in town had any. So, I went to one and bought 5 shortbread "people", and some merengue (spelling?) smiley faces. Pure sugar, coated with chocolate and candies. Silas LOVED them! Oh my goodness, it was the most sugar he's ever consumed in his young life. I don't do sweets with my babies. He sucked on that thing for so long. It was adorable.

We had the party at a large playground here in Wanganui. Actually, it's the one I posted a picture of awhile back, if you go back to sometime in Nov/Dec. in the archives. It really was a perfect day, and the perfect little low-key party. We had fun. Ethan had fun with his friends from Levin and it was fun to celebrate with people we knew. Ethan's first birthday, 5 days into our FIRST trip to NZ, was very much just the 3 of us. It's so good to come and have real friends this time.

Silas has spent his first couple weeks here in New Zealand perfecting his walking. The child walks everywhere now, and is so proud of himself. He's becoming proficient at stairs, up and down (although we don't have many), and has even stepped down a couple stairs (standing!), while holding the wall. He's so willing to try new things.

We do have pictures of his party, and I'd love to post them, but being on dial-up, it will literally take me hours to get them posted, so you all will just have to wait until next week, when we get our high-speed modem. Really, I will post pictures. I promise.

I love being a mama to a 1 year old. He's so much fun! He makes me laugh multiple times a day. He thinks he's very clever. And although I miss my itty-bitty baby (because I'm such a sucker for the newborn stage), I look forward to every stage still to come; his attempts at real words, interacting on more complex levels with Ethan, running and trying to keep up with his big brother, and even getting into more and more mischief. And this boy IS my mischief maker, a thousand times more than his brother ever was. Hopefully I won't be completely grey by the time we visit Canada again. ;)
