How did my beautiful boy get to be five years old?!?! Unbelievable. What a fun day it was. We strung a birthday banner in the kitchen and had his presents waiting on the table for him when he woke up. Then, of course, we shuffled him into the van while we did our regular Saturday morning garage saling. Sorry, kiddo. He got McDonalds for lunch and then in the afternoon, we drove down to Levin and had his party at his friend, Chiara's house. Our other friends with the 3 girls, Caitlin, Chelsea, and Mya, also came. They watched videos, decorated cupcakes, and just generally had a fun time. Ethan was SO excited to see Chiara, as she was to see him, but I think they were both a little shy when it came to the actual meeting. They are both so different than they were 2.5 years ago (obviously), but they still had fun.
Before we left Levin, we drove past our old house. We stopped in front of it and pointed it out to Ethan and told him that's where we used to live. Now, occasionally, over the past 2.5 years, he's come up with his own memories of NZ, but since being back here, has not truly recognized people or places we used to go to. But he saw our house and the first thing out of his mouth was, "I remember that house. I wore striped pajamas in that house." It was his first memory of NZ that was triggered by seeing something familiar. I almost cried. He DID have striped pajamas in that house. I remember them clearly. Amazing, really, that these things are in his head, seeing as he was only 2 years old at the time.
My big 5 year old boy went to bed, telling me over and over his favourite parts of the day, his little tummy full of chocolate cupcakes and chocolate milk (both his request). And his prayer, thanking God for giving him a good birthday. He already told someone today that he's "almost 6". Heehee. Slow down, little one, slow down.
(Pictures to come. I would have posted tonight, but I think our camera's in the van, I don't feel like going out and getting it).
