That is something I read once about parenting. The days are long and the years are short. Tonight, for the last time in my parenting life, I put a two year to bed. She will wake up in the morning and be 3. In the blink of an eye. How did that wee girl, who I can still feel in my arms, as though she was born yesterday, suddenly become a 3 year old? Not even a toddler, but a real little girl!
It is no secret, to those who know me well, that I ache for another baby. It won't happen. Even if I were to meet the perfect person for me and he joined my little family, I'm getting awfully close to 40. I don't know if I have the energy to do it all again, not to mention, I wouldn't be marrying him the day after I met him. Rory is my last baby, and I feel like her growing up is happening so fast, I can't even catch my breath, I can't even drink it all in, because it's passing me by!
She is a busy little thing. She doesn't sit still, she comes in for a cuddle, but is wiggling and dancing the entire time. She's not a snuggle in and stay there kind of kidlet. If she'd just STAY, I could drink her in, but she's off and dancing, and chasing her brothers, and building worlds of imagination in front of my eyes, and a lot of time, away from me, because she has so many companions to go play with. Her brothers adore her, the neighbour kids can't get enough of her, and everywhere we go, she is entertained (and entertaining) because everyone seems to be so captured by her. She is a much beloved little girl. She has a way with people that I've never quite seen in a child. She was born to be special, that is for certain.
I'm so in love with my daughter. Her spirit of joy inspires me. Her easily bruised sensitivity softens me. Her pure heart brings me to my knees. On my knees, I pray for her. I pray for her to remain pure, to always know exceeding love, to never sacrifice who she is, to never feel any void in her heart or life. I pray for my Saviour to enrapture her, and for her to place her tender heart in His hands, where it will be protected from the pains of the journey that is sure to come. Not that she won't ever feel pain, but that she will be guarded, protected, forever assured. I pray that for ALL my children.
Rory, I told you tonight that when you wake up, you will be 3. You are so excited to be 3. But I am going to baby you as long as you'll let me. I will never take you back to your bed when you come to mine in the night. You can stay. You can be the sweet breath I feel on my back as you press your head against me. I am going to kiss and hug away your sadness for as long as you bring it all to me. You are the gift I never knew I would need so much. God sent you to cement and save our little family of 4. You saved me and your brothers on September 12, 2009. You are our treasure, our sweet, pink, "plinta" (princess, for those of you who don't know). While I try to hold onto my baby, I will also rejoice in every day I get to watch you grow. I am privileged beyond measure. When I was pregnant with you, I prayed so desperately that I would not lose you, as I had lost others before, and every day, multiple times a day, I would pray, and tell you, deep in my spirit, these 6 words: "Grow big. Grow strong. Grow beautiful." I am speechless that God has answered that prayer every single day for the past 3 years. How did we get so lucky, that God gave us YOU?
I love you, Rory Juliet Miriama. Happy Birthday, Poppet!
