Birthday mush

Yes, birthday mush, the mush that comes out of sentimentality that washes over me all through January as two of my babies have birthdays.  I'm starting early.  Silas' birthday is still two days away.  Two days until he turns 5.  Five is a magical age.  At least, with one experience under my belt, I think it's magical.  It was with Ethan.  Much of the toddler/preschool tantruming is done (although, it likes to make come-backs, even at almost 9).  And something changes at 5.  Maybe it's the cultural idea that this is now a "school-aged" child, and that somehow changes our perspective on what they know, what they can do, how to interact with them.  Whatever it is, I love 5.

In two days, my sweet Boo-boo, my red-headed spitfire will be 5.  I was thinking back to his birth day today and remembering that the first words out of my mouth, upon seeing him were "Red hair!"  I remember being surprised by that, and I don't know why because his father has red hair (redder when he was younger).  I guess I was a typical mum of one child, not quite being able to fathom how the second child could be different.  And from that first glance, he was different.

He's my cuddler.  He's the only one of my 3 children who will cuddle with me and not move and squirm.  Oh, how delicious and wonderful it is to cuddle with him.  He's assertive.  He will tell you right away if you have hurt his feelings, he doesn't bottle it up.  He is the most fiery, but this attribute of his causes us to be able to reconcile quickly and fully.  What a gift.

Two more sleeps, my sweet, wee guy.  I'll muse some more this week.  Watch for more mush to come.
