...with my young 6 year old reader. A few weeks ago, at the library, Ethan chose several books and brought them home, as usual. One of them had the look of a chapter book, which I usually help him choose, but this time he chose it himself. It turned out to be a graphic novel for kids. Some of the pictures looked "iffy" to me (for his age), so I read it and determined that it is likely geared for 9-12 year olds, both in reading ability, comprehension, and content.
I told him I probably would wait and read it to him when he gets a little older, but he was welcome to keep it and look through it. He was ultimately fascinated with the pictures and how they're set up in comic book form. This was a brand new concept to him.
Well. Don't bother telling your budding reader that you won't read something to him, because he'll just go ahead and read it himself! Heh. He has had help with a few words, but he has read that book, cover to cover, so many times, I've lost track. He will literally sit with it for HOURS, working it all out. It's adorable, because he reads aloud and also gives different voices to the different characters. Through his intense persistence, I have relayed a lot of the storyline to him, and although a lot of the comprehension isn't quite there, he has the main jist of it. It is times like these when I just KNOW his persistence will be an amazing part of his success as an adult someday.
The book is called Amulet: The Stonekeeper. It is the first in a series, so I'm sure we'll be inundated with many more Amulet books in the future. Although, today, Ethan tried to snag the author's job. He pulled out paint and paper and painted 5 or 6 very interesting paintings, and told me he was making "Amulet 2" and once the paintings dry, I can help him write the story part. He's SO pleased with himself. It is a phenomenal thing when the discovery and learning just sweep us away. THAT is how learning should be. To be swept up in the joy of it.
Ethan, I'm so proud of you, I could burst.
