I was told God was found in the church.
But I found God in the fast food restaurant washroom, quickly finishing up a paper towel "bath", gathering her meager belongings and pulling a sweater on over her swollen, pregnant middle. I bought her a meal and she asked me my name. God's baby will be born this spring.
I was told God was found in the pages of an ancient book.
But I found God drinking coffee in a downtown restaurant, looking like he might not have seen a shower in awhile, and hadn't shopped for new clothes in even longer. I bought God his coffee for the next day, assured he'd be there again, as he is every day.
I was told God was found in prayer.
But I found God, dying in a hospice, yet instead of comforting her, she comforted me, and the multitudes of others who came for the same reason as I; to comfort the dying. This dying God comforted us.
I was told God was found with other believers.
But I found God in an atheist's living room, in a Muslim woman's smile, in the prayer of a pagan, in the loving-kindness meditation of a friend, in telling a beloved child that it's okay to find his own beliefs, even if they don't match mine or anyone else's.
I was told God was found in certain places, in certain ways, with certain people. But God is found wherever I choose to see her. God is found when my eyes are open to seeing the beauty in nature, the beauty and depth of another soul, and the beauty of my own heart. God is found wherever and whenever and however the seeker chooses to find him.
*Footnote: I exchange him/her for God freely in this post because that ancient book tells me God is both male and female, and I have found that embracing the female aspects of God have freed and empowered me as a woman so much in recent years. It is not meant to make a "statement" but simply to embrace how I have come to see God, which is inclusive of ALL the aspects of ALL of us.
