Yes, I thought it was weird when I first heard the term, too. As most of you know, we are homeschooling Ethan. Technically, he's not "school age" yet, but hey, life's all about learning, right? The more research I did on homeschooling and as Ethan and I maneuver our way through life, the more I realized that what I'm drawn to, and what we instinctively do, is unschooling. This website actually sums up what we do and what my heart desires to do with Ethan when it comes to learning and teaching.
He is such a unique character. He learns, more than anyone I've ever met, at his own pace. He will rarely pick up on something simply because I want him to. Oh, the battles we've fought over that. Unschooling fits him better than any curriculum ever could. I feel much like the author of the article. If he wants to learn by doing workbooks and through textbooks, great! But if not, that's okay too. Both Colin and I believe a wide exposure to the world is the best way for him to learn.
And this farm!! Oh my goodness, my mother-in-law and her partner have been Ethan's "teachers" since we got here. It is an ideal unschooling environment. And at this time, when I am so distracted and feel like I have too much on my plate, it is perfect timing once again. We are right where we're supposed to be.
